Zionism and FIFA: A Complicated Chapter in Football History

Vortrag von Dr. Ofer Idels (LMU) und Podiumsdiskussion

31.05.2023 at 18:15

Vortrag von Dr. Ofer Idels, Carl Friedrich von Siemens Research Fellow der Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung, und anschließende Diskussion mit Lehrstuhlinhaber Prof. Dr. Michael Brenner und Koordinator des Zentrums für Israel-Studien Dr. Ghilad Shenhav

Zionism had a complex relationship with FIFA and the international sporting community. Since the 1920s, delegations of the Jewish community in Mandatory Palestine have attempted to officially join the international organization, yet, simultaneously expressed a deep indifference to its procedures and worldview. This lecture explores the first contacts between the parties, the Zionist participation in the World Cup qualifiers, and the international collaboration's effect on the local way the game was played in Mandatory Palestine and the State of Israel. It will discuss the ethnic, class and conceptual tensions between Jews and non-Jews, and provides a better understanding of contemporary issues like the Super League and the Qatar World Cup.
