Israeli Haredi Society in the Wake of October 7, 2023
Prof. Dr. Kimmy Caplan (Bar Ilan)
07.05.2025 at 19:00
The Haredi community (Ultra-Orthodox) represents approximately 12% of Israel’s population. The Haredi approach towards the state and its ambivalent involvement in Israeli society have been a topic for heated discussions in recent decades. The debate has reached a peaking point since the October 7 massacre and the war in Gaza. This lecture will examine what happened to the Ultra-Orthodox community in the last year and a half, how its members experienced and reacted to the national trauma, why its leaders are opposing more than ever sending young Haredim to the army, and how secular and Modern-Orthodox Israelis perceive the Haredim today?
Kimmy Caplan teaches at the Israel and Golda Koschitzky Department of Jewish History and Contemporary Jewry, Bar-Ilan University. His field of scholarly interest is Jewish religious history in the 19th and 20th centuries.
