Dr. Ghilad Shenhav's work is situated between cultural history, religious studies, and Israel studies. He is currently completing his book Beyond the Bible: Zionism, Talmud, and the Question of History, which studies the political role of the Talmud between 1880 and 1920 in three centers: Eastern Europe, Western Europe, and Ottoman Palestine. Through a comparative analysis of modern interpretations of the Talmud, the book complicates common assumptions about the nationalization and secularization of religious sources and suggests a novel narrative of the evolution of early Zionist culture. His current research and publications also address the perception of Israel in German culture, asking how Israel, both as a concrete place and as an abstract ideal, has been imagined in German history, philosophy, and literature.
